Henry Crommelin Jr. ’57

Henry Crommelin Jr. ’57 passed away April 4. Henry graduated from Phillips Andover. He majored in history, belonged to Chi Phi, and participated in the DOC all four years and in Winter Carnival planning. After college he entered Navy officer candidate school and was sworn in by his father, who was commander of the Newport (Rhode Island) Naval Base. He spent three years as a line officer on the destroyer USS Forest Sherman, graduated from Medical College of Alabama (now University of Alabama Birmingham) in 1965, returned to active duty, and served three years as a medical officer before resigning his commission in 1969 as a lieutenant commander. Henry continued his medical education with four years of obstetrics and gynecology at the Birmingham University Hospital and at Carraway Methodist Hospital, finishing up in 1973. Henry practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Birmingham with associates for 22 years until 1995, when he stopped delivering babies and joined Birmingham Obstetrics and Gynecology P.C., operating and assisting on surgeries until his retirement. He loved spending time with his family, whether in Birmingham, at Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, or on the ski slopes, where he last skied at age 80! He was a faithful member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the Rotary Club of Birmingham, and the Country Club of Birmingham, where he rarely missed his lunch group. He was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 46 years. He is survived by children William, Henry, Elizabeth, and Charles and 13 grandchildren.
