David Russell Joyce ’79

David Russell Joyce ’79 died on February 3, 2020, after a sudden illness. For the past seven years “Rusty” had lived in McKinney, Texas. Rusty taught U.S. history and coached tennis to enthusiastic and grateful high school students. At Dartmouth Rusty was a proud member of Alpha Chi Alpha and Dragon. He majored in history and played on the rugby team. Rusty was passionate about many things: American history, the Boston teams, and advising his students on college admissions. Even when he lived on the other side of the country, he always kept track of Dartmouth athletics. He was proud to be a member of Alpha Chi and the rugby team at Dartmouth, and often said that his days in Hanover were some of the happiest of his life. His Dartmouth classmates, particularly his Alpha Chi and Rugby brothers, fondly remember Rusty as considerate, warm, friendly with a ready smile, and a fleet-footed warrior on the rugby pitch. A classmate recalled a language study abroad to Blois, France, trip together. She got off the train to buy some food and missed its departure. When she caught the next train, Rusty was waiting at the next station with all her things. He will be missed by his classmates and his family, which includes many Dartmouth alumni. Rusty will be laid to rest in Hanover.
