William B. Van de Graff ’65
William B. Van de Graff ’65, M.D., died December 26, 2020, after a long fight with heart failure and complications. He grew up in the Boston area. Bill had an interest in the outdoors that began in summer camp, leading him to take two years off from Dartmouth to go to Seattle to learn mountaineering. A physics major and member of Phi Tau, he helped rewrite its constitution and was proud that he insisted on wording that allowed women to join when Dartmouth became coed. After Dartmouth Bill studied painting in New York City; he developed a fever of unknown cause, leading to an interest in medicine. Bill did his med school, residency, and fellowship at Case Western, joined the faculty at Loyola University, and finally served as director of the medical intensive care unit at Hines VA Hospital. He was also a man of great passion for his hobbies. In earlier years mountaineering and gardening were sources of great pleasure and pride, especially at the house he resided in for the last 29 years of his life. He was a life member of the American Alpine Club and enjoyed passing on a love of hiking to his children, especially in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He is survived by his wife, Mary Kay; sons Robert, David and Michael; brother John; and sister-in-law MaryLee.
