Robert C. Clark ’54

Robert C. Clark ’54 of Lebanon, New Hampshire, died on January 24. He raged against the dying of the light until the age of 88. Bob was born in Athol, Massachusetts, and was raised in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where he went to high school. At Dartmouth he rowed on the men’s lightweight crew team, until it was discovered he didn’t know how to swim. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Munich, Germany, where, he often said, he kept the local beer halls safe from foreign invasion. Upon discharge he worked in purchasing for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Connecticut, and then for many years as a sales engineer for Power Draulics in Plainville, Connecticut. At Pratt & Whitney he met Irene Blake, and they were married in 1960. Bob was an avid reader of history books and a long-suffering Red Sox fan. He was known for his kindness, dignity, and wry sense of humor and as a loyal friend. In his later years he took great joy in visits with his children and grandchildren. Bob was predeceased by older sister Elizabeth and companion Nancy. He is survived by son John; son Robert and his wife, Laurie; former wife Irene; grandchildren William, Thomas, Daniel, and Michaela; younger sister Norma and her husband, Jack; and many nieces and nephews.
