Samuel Holway Daniell ’52

Samuel Holway Daniell ’52 of Exeter, New Hampshire, passed away on January 22 from complications of Covid-19. Sam was born in Boston on September 26, 1929. He graduated from Stearns High School, Phillips Exeter Academy, and Dartmouth before earning a Tuck-Thayer degree in 1953. He was a member of Theta Chi, Casque & Gauntlet, and Green Key and captain of the cross-country track team. He was active in the NROTC program and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for three years. Sam forged his career as an executive with two manufacturing companies, the Bryant Chucking Grinder Co. and the Nashua Corp., from which he retired in 1994. In those communities Sam and Zandra, who married in 1953, took on civic leadership in the local libraries and schools. Zandra predeceased Sam in 2010. Following minor health issues in his 40s, Sam resumed running and later, like his father, road racing throughout New England with great success into his late 70s at distances ranging from 5 kilometers to full marathons. Sam is survived by children Christopher ’76, Mark, Stephen ’79, Brian, and Zia and 12 grandchildren. Other Dartmouth relatives include Sam’s father, Warren Daniell ’22, brothers Warren ’48 and Jere ’55, brother-in-law Donald Smith ’51, cousin Martin Daniell ’57, and niece Leah Wheelan ’88.
