Marr P. Mullen ’51

Marr P. Mullen ’51, M.D., a prominent orthopedic surgeon in Seattle, died at his home in nearby Mercer Island on November 27, 2020. Marr was an adventurous soul with an outgoing personality and many lifelong friendships. He loved riding his Harley Davidson with his motorcycle buddies, exploring much of the western United States. He flew his own float plane and enjoyed a wide variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, hunting, fly fishing, and scuba diving. Until two knee replacements curtailed his skiing, he was a heli-skier, snow skier, and water skier. Along with his love of the outdoors Marr also appreciated music—including classical and bluegrass—as well as other forms of art and culture. His love of travel took him to a Mount Everest base camp. At Dartmouth Marr was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and the heavyweight crew team. A highlight of those years was competing in the Henley Regatta in England as a member of the Dartmouth crew in the summer of 1950. He received his medical degree at the University of Washington Medical School and served for two years as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. In his medical practice Marr specialized in hip, knee, and back treatment, with a special interest in the treatment of scoliosis. He was a member of national, state, and Seattle medical and orthopedic societies and was a founding member of the Scoliosis Research Society. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, two children, and two grandchildren.
