Braving the Elements

Erich Osterberg is at his best when he’s under the weather.

When it comes to data, the earth sciences prof likes to look at the long term. He teaches meteorology, which involves the tracking and analysis of many numbers. “It is a useful way to teach about working with any scientific data set,” he says. Given Hanover’s—and Dartmouth’s—long history of collecting meteorological information, students have what he calls a “fabulous data set” to work with.
