Robert Scott Cheyne ’66

Robert Scott Cheyne ’66, a Vietnam Navy veteran and successful advertising executive, died on November 22, 2020, at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Center in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Scott was both a standout athlete and a strong student at Stoneham (Massachusetts) High School, where he played varsity hockey. At Dartmouth he was a member of Chi Phi and Dragon and played on the golf team. After earning an M.S. in public communications at Syracuse University, Scott enrolled in the Navy’s officer candidate school in Newport, Rhode Island, and served as lieutenant on the battleship New Jersey as a public relations officer in Vietnam. After receiving an honorable discharge, Scott applied his communication skills to his first civilian job: chief of staff to Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Donald Dwight. Scott left the statehouse in 1975 and embarked on a 30-year career at Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, one of New England’s leading ad agencies. There he stewarded the success of many memorable campaigns for The Boston Globe, Papa Gino’s, Harvard Pilgrim, and the Massachusetts State Lottery, which grew to become the most successful lottery per capita in the United States. Scott had a lifelong passion for golf and was a mainstay for decades at Salem Country Club in Peabody, Massachusetts. Scott is survived by his wife, Vashti, daughter Christie, and grandson Jonathan.
