Douglas M. Archibald ’55

Douglas M. Archibald ’55 died at his home in Waterville, Maine, on November 13, 2020. He is survived by Debra, a former professor and his wife of 26 years, and children Nathan ’84, Jennifer ’85, Michael, Timothy, and Galen. He also leaves 13 grandchildren. Doug was raised in Rye, New York, and came to Dartmouth after graduating from Vermont Academy. He majored in English and was a member of Delta Tau Delta and Air Force ROTC. After graduation Doug spent three years in the Air Force, then completed a Ph.D. in English at the University of Michigan. Doug began teaching at Cornell University in 1963 and moved to Colby College in Maine in 1973. He was chairman of the English department for eight years and became dean of the faculty in 1982.
