Benjamin H. Schore ’51

Benjamin H. Schore ’51, an adopted member of the class and frequent host of ’51 reunion gatherings at his Etna, New Hampshire home, died on August 12, 2020. Ben, who moved to the Hanover area in 1980, had a strong positive influence on the Upper Valley arts community. He commissioned a set of glass benches at the Hood Museum in memory of his late wife. Other contributions include an outdoor sculpture gallery in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and a cabaret space at the Barrett Center for the Arts in White River Junction, Vermont. He helped found the creative arts program at Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center. Ben served on the board of overseers of both the Hopkins Center and the Hood Museum. Giving back was a consistent theme throughout his life. Music was a lifelong love, beginning as a child, when his mother taught him to play the piano. As a young man he created a jazz band—the Ben Schore Orchestra—that helped finance his music education at Brandeis University, where he studied under Leonard Bernstein, and later his graduate business studies at Columbia University. Ben’s professional career was in the real estate business. He was a developer and investor, eventually owning several shopping centers. He was an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, where he taught courses in real estate and established a chair in the subject. He leaves his longtime companion, Kathy.
