Bruce A. Coggeshall ’63

Bruce A. Coggeshall ’63 died on September 14, 2020, in South Portland, Maine, of lung cancer. Bruce was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, and raised in Newport, New Hampshire. He attended Towle High School, where he was president of the student council, editor of the yearbook, and captain of the cross-country, track, and ski teams. He was awarded a scholarship to Dartmouth, where he majored in economics and was president of Sigma Epsilon. He was on the Undergraduate Council and dorm committee and served as Topliff dorm chair. Bruce was a longtime volunteer for the Alumni Fund and a member of the Alumni Council and its athletic committee. He was a class officer from 1982 to 2001. After graduation Bruce married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis, and they moved to Ithaca, New York, where Bruce was awarded a fellowship to Cornell Law School. He graduated in 1967 with an LL.B. and M.B.A. He returned to New England and joined a small Portland, Maine, law firm named Pierce Atwood that eventually became a major regional firm. Bruce spent 45 years with Pierce Atwood, 12 as managing partner, and was recognized as one of Maine’s leading corporate and commercial lawyers and a pioneer in the practice of tax-exempt and municipal financing. In retirement he and his wife shared time between homes in Falmouth, Maine, and Bradenton, Florida. He is survived by Phyllis, two sons, and five granddaughters.
