James H. Eldredge ’51

James H. Eldredge ’51, M.D., a retired orthopedic surgeon living in Centerville, Massachusetts, died on July 27, 2020. Jim came to Dartmouth after 18 months of service as a corpsman in the U.S. Merchant Marine’s Military Sea Transport division. He left Dartmouth after his junior year to enroll in an accelerated program at Boston University Medical School, receiving his M.D. in 1954. After serving in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant, j.g., he undertook a five-year orthopedic residency at Massachusetts General Children’s Hospital. He formed a small private practice on Cape Cod, where he spent his entire medical career, retiring in 1992. Jim loved his life on the Cape. He was an active tennis player and sailor and raised Chesapeake Bay retrievers. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Chesapeake and pitbull safe harbor programs assisting injured or abandoned animals.
