David Marc Kahler ’81
David Marc Kahler ’81, M.D., died August 9 at his home in Dyke, Virginia. Dave came to Dartmouth from La Jolla, California. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) and the cycling team and worked at The Dartmouth. His love of the outdoors, sense of adventure, and keen intellect were well served by the College, where he learned to sky dive, scuba dive, cross-country ski, and rock climb. A highlight of his Dartmouth experience was his junior year biology foreign study program, which took him to the rain forests and reefs of Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Jamaica. He treasured his time in Hanover and the lifelong friends he made. SAE brother Tom Kiernan recalls that Dave was president of the house his senior year. “For the last 10 years a dozen or so SAE ’81 brothers gathered every other year for a long weekend of poker, paintball, and more than a few games of Whales Tails. He will be dearly missed!” Dave graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1985 and became a pioneering orthopedic surgeon. He spent his entire career at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Medical Center. Among his numerous contributions there, he directed its trauma center and supported its sports teams with the same enthusiasm he brought to all his endeavors. He retired in 2017. He is survived by his daughter, Katherine; former wife Victoria; parents; brothers Geoffrey, Christopher and James; and sister Sally’83.
