Claude G. Liman ’65

Claude G. Liman ’65 of London, Ontario, died on September 5 as a result of being struck while bicycling near his home in London. “Rocky” came to Dartmouth from Pound Ridge, New York, by way of Deerfield Academy. An English major, he was a four-year member of the ski team, participating in alpine events and jumping (and disdaining cross-country skiing). Following Dartmouth he taught and coached at Proctor Academy in Vermont for several years, while earning his M.A. at NYU and Ph.D. at University of Colorado. He then headed north to teach American literature and creative writing at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, from 1973 until his retirement in 2005. During this time he published several books of poetry and short stories. He was an active member of Zion United Church in London. He was an avid golfer (3 handicap), cyclist, and marathoner, and skiing became his passion; to quote his Dartmouth ski teammate and friend Chuck Lobitz ’65, “Ironically, once in cold, flat Ontario, Rocky’s collegiate distaste for cross country evolved into a passion for Nordic, including his competing several times in the renowned 50-kilomter American Birkebeiner.” He is survived by his partner, Wanda, son Ben, daughters Sarah and Rebecca, and grandson Grayson. He was recently predeceased by son Jesse.
