John D. Shultz ’51
John D. Shultz ’51, a 30-year resident of Vero Beach, Florida, died there on July 22. He is survived by his wife, Marion, two children, and two granddaughters. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert ’49. John was a history major at Dartmouth and a member of Gamma Delta Chi. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army artillery in Korea, where he monitored radar for incoming shells to inform return fire. Only much later in life did he share with his family and close friends both the horrors endured and the special bonds made during that time. After his Army service John returned to Naperville, Illinois, where he had grown up. He owned and managed a manufacturing company there for many years. Always a fan of technology, he talked his way into the exclusive Consumer Electronic shows to see what the future might look like. When his manufacturing business was underway and successful he found a new passion: owning harness racing horses that competed at tracks in the Chicago area in the 1970s and 1980s. Another passion was the Chicago Cubs. John and his family attended the Cubs’ first night game at Wrigley Field. After the death of his first wife, Marie, and too many winters shoveling snow, John retired to Vero Beach, where he enjoyed playing golf, dancing, and travel. He also enjoyed reading—especially history—and playing cards with friends and family.
