James Garnett Torian ’45

James Garnett Torian ’45, loving husband and father of three children, passed away peacefully May 30 at his home in Rancho Santa Fe, California. He was born on May 12, 1924, in Evansville, Indiana, sharing his childhood with his brother, Paul. A Navy lieutenant, j.g., Jim served as a gunnery officer aboard the carrier USS Lexington during WW II, then returned to graduate from Dartmouth in 1945 in the V-12 program. Jim was a member of Panarchy and pursued a sociology major. After graduation Jim met Ariel Tatman while working at her parents’ store in Chicago and they married in 1948. The Torian family relocated to Rancho Santa Fe, where they opened a clothing store, The Two Goats, in 1959. The family enjoyed an active lifestyle. Retiring in 1984, the couple traveled extensively and played tournament croquet, often returning with trophies. Jim was predeceased by Ariel, brother Paul, and daughter Ariel. He is survived by son James Jr.; daughter Polly and her husband, Richard; grandchildren Nicholas, Alisa, Shelley, Christopher, and Ashley; and four great-grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 64, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067; animalcenter.org. The class of 1945 sends its condolences to the Torian family.
