James Tyre ’75

James Tyre ’75, a second-generation Angeleno, passed away unexpectedly on March 3. After graduating from Dartmouth Jim earned his law degree at Loyola Law School. Jim was active in the leadership of the Aegis, Jack-O-Lantern, and The Dartmouth. Those writing and editorial skills placed him in an excellent position to be a tenacious advocate for free speech with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. On March 4 foundation executive director Cindy Cohn eloquently described his contributions as a lawyer, colleague, and friend in the article, “Internet Loses One of its Biggest, Best Advocates: EFF Special Counsel Jim Tyre.” In addition, he was a lover of hole-in-the-wall restaurants, Twitter debates, and (not surprisingly) the Dodgers. Jim is survived by his sister, Ellen, and her children, Brian and Allison. He will be remembered as their favoritebrother and uncle.
