Herbert Arnold Muller ’52

Herbert Arnold Muller ’52, M.D., died on April 29 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He was born on April 16, 1930, in Albany, New York. In 1948 “Arn” graduated from the Bulkeley School in New London, Connecticut. He then graduated from Dartmouth as a Phi Beta Kappa and Harvard Medical School (1955). Arn and Anne Watson met in Boston and, following a brief courtship, they were married June 18, 1955. He served as a doctor in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1965 and then entered private practice in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. In 1973 Arn was asked to establish the emergency department at the Hershey Medical Center. He was the first emergency physician and founding chief of emergency medicine at Hershey. Considered one of the founding fathers of emergency medicine, he campaigned to have the practice officially recognized as a specialty, which it was in 1979. Arn served as vice president (1980-81) and then president (1982-83) of the American College of Emergency Physicians. In 1979 Arn was appointed secretary of health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, serving until 1987. From 1987 to 2003 he served as chief of staff at the Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Arn was a faithful member of Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey from 1973 until his death, serving in several roles, including elder. Arn is survived by Anne; children Janice (and husband Mitch), Carl, Sarah, Peter, and Paul (and wife Deanna); 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
