Jeffrey Scott Shiffrin ’76

Jeffrey Scott Shiffrin ’76, M.D., died February 2 following injuries sustained in a fall. A devoted member of the Dartmouth ski team and Psi Upsilon, Jeff was the proud father of Mikaela and Taylor and husband of Eileen, whom he met during his medical residency. Family was Jeff’s top priority. His support of son Taylor’s and daughter Mikaela’s athletic endeavors was evident from their earliest days on the home slopes of Vail, Colorado, where Jeff worked as an anesthesiologist at Vail Valley Medical Center. During Taylor’s years of NCAA ski competition and Mikaela’s World Cup races, Jeff’s live-action race photography gained global recognition. The deep bonds of the Shiffrin family are captured in Mikaela’s recent Instagram post: “My family is heartbroken beyond comprehension about the unexpected passing of my kindhearted, loving, caring, patient, wonderful father. Above everything else, he taught us the golden rule: be nice, think first. This is something I will carry with me forever.” Born in Dover, New Jersey, Jeff excelled at sports and was an accomplished musician. One Psi U friend recalls the brothers’ surprise at discovering Jeff’s musical skills when he picked up a trumpet for a flawless, impromptu performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. A graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Jeff did his residency at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, Massachusetts, followed by a fellowship at DHMC. Contributions may be made in his memory to Friends of Dartmouth Skiing.
