Jameson Wallace “Jim” Doig ’54

Jameson Wallace “Jim” Doig ’54 passed away October 19, 2019, in Lebanon New Hampshire. He came to Dartmouth from Stamford (Connecticut) High School and majored in philosophy. He was a member of Gamma Delta Chi, the Undergraduate Council, the Forensic Union, The Dartmouth, the Council on Student Organizations, the National Student Association, and Delta Sigma Rho. He was also a Navy ROTC student. After three years as an officer in the U.S. Navy Jim went on to Princeton University to earn an M.B.A. in 1958 and a Ph.D. in politics in 1961. He was hired as an assistant professor at Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and was promoted to full professor in 1970. He transferred to emeritus status in 2004. Not one for retirement, Jim was named research professor in government at Dartmouth, where he taught comparative federalism and gender studies. During a lengthy career, Jim wrote extensively on transportation politics, authoring or coauthoring several books in the field. He was widely recognized as an expert in federalism, American and Canadian constitutional law, and politics in general. Many honors came his way both as a prominent member of the Princeton faculty and nationally for his public service. He was also noted for being an extremely dedicated teacher and mentor to his students beyond the classroom. Jim is survived by his wife, Joan; children Rachel, Stephen, and Sean and their spouses; granddaughter Pamela and her spouse; and great-granddaughter Charlotte.
