Year of the Rat
Hopkins Center celebrated the lunar new year on January 25 with a mix of dance, drumming, and pipa (an Asian string instrument) performance by Xin Ran.  

Another One Bites the Dust
In June, Jewel of India will become yet another Hanover restaurant that has closed. The College is not renewing the eatery’s lease.  

But A New Café Opens
Ramekin, a new dining location for students, has opened in the renovated Dana Hall.

Exposure
A “member of the Dartmouth community” reportedly received treatment for tuberculosis in January.

Growth Spurt
Hockey star Drew O’Connor ’22 stood 5-feet-9 when Dartmouth recruited him two years ago. He’s now approaching 6-feet-4. 

The Places She’ll Go
Student Sydney Kamen ’19 received a Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship, which funds two years of graduate study and commits her to five years in the U.S. Foreign Service.

Time for a Turnaround
Amy Fowler is out as field hockey coach after 20 years at the College. Last fall her team finished 4-13 and went winless in the Ivy League.

The Question Is…
Geisel Med School student Sathvik Namburar DMS’22 appeared on Jeopardy! last fall. He won his first game, then lost his second

About 200 people attended a Top of the Hop talk by Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard in January.

Day of Remembrance
Reverend professor Cornell William Brooks, former CEO of the NAACP, served as keynote speaker for the Tucker Foundation’s Martin Luther King Jr. multifaith celebration on January 26.

The most interesting result of The Dartmouth’s student fall politics survey? The fact that 33 percent of respondents find Twitter “unfavorable,” as opposed to 29 percent who find it “favorable.”  

Snow Day
The annual student snowball fight took place on January 8.

The Aspen Institute has named Tuck dean Matthew Slaughter’s “Leadership in the Global Economy” one of 2019’s “most forward-thinking” business courses.

Speed Freak
World junior medalist Katharine Ogden ’21 won the women’s individual classic sprint at a U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association SuperTour event in Idaho in December.

“War is Not the Answer”
About 50 people gathered on the Green to protest U.S. policy toward Iran following the missile strike that killed Qasem Soleimani in January.   

Field General
Gordon “Honda” Barnes, head of the athletic grounds crew since 1998, announced his retirement in January.  

Gone Too Soon
Sandy Ford-Centonze, head coach of women’s track and field for 28 years, was memorialized at a service held in Rollins Chapel on January 4.
