Leslie C. Scammon Jr. ’57

Leslie C. Scammon Jr. ’57 of Concord, New Hampshire, died peacefully on November 27, 2019. His death brought an end to a long line of Scammon family members in Stratham, New Hampshire, descended from Richard Scammon, who in 1665 joined Thomas Wiggin as one of the town’s founding families. Les attended Phillips Exeter Academy, where he was a star baseball pitcher and started every game his senior year and beat rival Phillips Andover. At Dartmouth he majored in English, was in Alpha Theta, and played baseball under coach Red Rolfe. McGraw-Hill publishing company hired Les to a sales position in Maine and three years later he was appointed New England sales manager. In 1968 Les went to Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh and during the next 12 years served as college counselor, assistant to the headmaster, director of development, and chair of the faculty committee that transformed the school from an all-male, boarding day school into a coed institution. In 1981 Les accepted a development position at the Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island, to be followed during the next 15 years by fundraising assignments at the N.H. Historical Society and N.H. public television. Les also offered free tax preparation as a volunteer in AARP’s tax aide program. Les is survived by his wife, Barbara, also a descendent of a Stratham, New Hampshire founder, son Steven, daughter Lee Ann, son Jon, and their families.
