Stephen Diao ’83

Stephen Diao ’83 died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on September 20, 2019, after suffering a stroke following a bike ride with friends. He was a resident of Oakland, California. He came to Dartmouth from Irvington (New York) High School and Burke (Vermont) Mountain School, where he developed his love of the mountains and skiing. He majored in government, participated in foreign study, taught Chinese cooking to nursing students, and coached volleyball. Following graduation Stephen pursued a career as a well-respected investment banker throughout Asia, working for two decades in Hong Kong at Credit Suisse, Barclays, and the Japanese bank Mitsubishi UFG, where he was head of Asia-Pacific capital markets. He was one of Asia’s best-known and well-liked bankers. He relocated to the United States in 2016. More recently Stephen served as the president of the board of directors of Project Bike Tech. Stephen excelled at ski racing, road biking, tennis, cooking, drinking games, photography, volleyball, ping pong, and yoga. He loved his two children most of all and participated actively in their lives. They traveled the world together, experiencing adventures, sampling cuisines, skiing the Rockies, surfing the Pacific, and making friends. Stephen is remembered for his exuberant personality and infectious love of life. His boundless energy means that his loss has come as a shock to many. He is survived by his parents, Roger and Ivy Diao, sisters Renee and Deborah; children Alec and Maya, and the love of his life, Patti.
