Joseph Vincent Nicolosi ’79
Joseph Vincent Nicolosi ’79, M.D., died peacefully on August 25, 2019, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. At the age of 14, Joe earned a scholarship to Phillips Academy Andover, where he ran cross country, rowed crew, was a member of the riflery team, and performed in theater arts. Joe pursued a rigorous premed curriculum while an English major at Dartmouth and went on language study abroad programs to France and Italy. He was a four-year letterman on the varsity riflery team, serving as captain during his senior year, when he also became a member of the varsity trapshooting team. A beloved brother of Sigma Epsilon, Joe was affectionately known for his terrible taste in music despite being a DJ on WDCR/WFRD and a singer in Glee Club. Joe earned an M.A. from Boston University and an M.D. from Eastern Virginia Medical School before going on to become a widely respected anesthesiologist. A devout Christian, Joe always stepped up to put his medical training to work for those in need. Through Project Hope and Mercy Ships, “Dr. J” would hop on a helicopter to administer to the sick and injured. Joe loved the outdoors and Texas. He would often say, “I was born a Texan, just not in Texas.” He enjoyed hunting, shooting, barbecuing, and spending time with friends and family. A classmate wrote: “Joe worked very hard for everything he achieved and achieved most everything he set out to do. I send my belated appreciation for a guy with true grit.”
