Edward Joe Johanson ’60

Edward Joe Johanson ’60 died on April 24 in Sarasota, Florida, surrounded by his children. He was born on January 31, 1938, to Arnold “Joe” and Blanche Johanson in Omaha, Nebraska. After graduating from Lamar High School in Plymouth, Michigan, Edward attended Dartmouth, where he played in the band for four years and majored in economics. He earned a master’s from Tuck School in 1962 and moved to Detroit, where he proudly served as a member of the Air National Guard. There, he met and married Cynthia. His professional career spanned more than 30 years at the General Motors Corp., where he served as director of fixed income investments and on the board of directors of the Motor Insurance Co. In the later part of his career he and his wife made their home for 25 years in Garden City, New York, where their two children, Eric and Jennifer, were born. In 1996 he retired and they moved to Sarasota, Florida, and spent their summers in Estes Park, Colorado. His love of the arts and nature led him to volunteer at the Selby Gardens in Sarasota. Bob traveled in the United States, visiting many national parks, and around the world, making friends in Jamaica, Madeira, and Turkey. He was preceded in death by Cynthia. He is remembered for his impeccable integrity, irreverent sense of humor, magnanimous giving, and exceptional intelligence.
