James R. Saphir ’57

James R. Saphir ’57 of Berkeley, California, passed away on August 30, 2015. “Bob” came to Dartmouth from Highland Park (Illinois) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in zoology and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Handel Society, the Chamber Music Club (as president), and the string quartet (as violinist). In 1958 he received a diploma from Dartmouth Medical School and in 1963 an M.D. from Harvard University. In our 25th reunion book, Bob said, “My luck has been good since graduation from Dartmouth. Every step along the way has been satisfying: my acceptance to Harvard Medical School, meeting my wife in Boston, acquiring three wonderful children, and developing my career in medicine and enjoying playing chamber music.” Bob was director of cardiology at Herrick Hospital and Health Care Center in Berkeley. He practiced cardiology for more than 40 years.
