Peter M. Slavin ’63
Peter M. Slavin ’63 died on March 29 after having been struck by a motorist on March 24 while cycling in the northern Virginia countryside. Peter was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and attended Shaker Heights High. At Dartmouth Peter was a writer for The Dartmouth, which prepared him for his journalism career. He was a brother of Alpha Chi Rho and a member of ROTC. After Dartmouth Peter did graduate work at the London School of Economics, followed by active duty as an intelligence officer in Vietnam (earning a Bronze Star), a tour that affected his future journalism direction. His career with the Detroit Free Press and the Louisville, Kentucky, Courier-Journal and several freelance assignments brought to public attention various people and events: Harriet Tubman, Appalachian mountaintop removal, North Korean refugees, and the Vietnam War. Peter had a particular interest in working with troubled adolescents. He is survived by Susan, his wife of 39 years.
