Philip A. Anderson ’57

Philip A. Anderson ’57 of Barrington, Rhode Island, died peacefully on April 13 in the presence of his loving family. Phil’s family moved to Barrington, Rhode Island, and he jokingly would say, “I never left town.” He graduated from Moses Brown School in nearby Providence. At Dartmouth, he majored in economics and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Phil had a knack for creating new and exciting career opportunities. After a stint in the Navy Air Force, his first job was producing nuclear fuel elements for Engelhard Industries. From there he trained as a systems engineer at IBM and then started his own computer service company with a friend. In 10 years he built it to 25 people, sold it to a bank holding company, and then worked for this company for five years. He then acquired the educational filmstrip division of a local company and, with his wife, Mudge, started Creative Learning, returning to computer consulting. Phil loved nature and described their cabin on Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, as “the closest thing to paradise on earth,” with sailing, hiking, waterskiing, swimming, snorkeling, and tubing with his sons and grandsons. Phil especially loved sailing, and for 20 years happily sailed and explored the islands off Westport, Massachusetts. He was a faithful regular at his church, and for 50 years his beautiful tenor voice was heard in church choirs and the Rhode Island Civic Chorale. He is survived by Mudge, the love of his life, his sons, and grandsons.
