Benjamin Heady Lawwill ’52

Benjamin Heady Lawwill ’52 died April 16 in Tucson, Arizona. Ben was born in Cincinnati on September 1, 1930. He graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in Massachusetts and then from Dartmouth, where he majored in psychology, was a member of Zeta Psi, excelled as a pole vaulter, and was active in politics. After serving for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, Ben moved to Tucson and joined the Tucson Police Department, eventually attaining the rank of lieutenant. He also spent a year at Northwestern University, studying traffic police administration. Eventually he left the police department and began manufacturing pickup-mounted Malibu campers. About seven years later he fulfilled another dream with the purchase of a 40-foot sailing vessel, Amiga, and sailed the Caribbean for six years with his wife, Janet. They then settled back in Tucson. Ben was active in Dartmouth alumni activities in Arizona and served for many years as the class of 1952 webmaster. He leaves his grandson, Richard, and loving friend Doris Lynn.
