James E. Ballard ’51

James E. Ballard ’51 died on May 1 in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Jim had a long career in sales and sales management. Jim earned his varsity “D” as a center on Dartmouth basketball teams coached by Doggie Julian. He was also a member of Kappa Sigma. Following graduation, he served for three years as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In his 43-year sales career Jim worked for Westinghouse Electric Corp., Bissell Inc., and Dale Carnegie Training. Before retiring in 1997 he spent 22 years as northern regional manager for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He loved collegiate and professional sports. There was no bigger fan of the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team and he closely followed championship golf and the Boston Red Sox. An inveterate card player, he also delighted in tending his garden and savoring a good cigar. Jim is survived by his wife, Connie, three children, and eight grandchildren.
