The Alumni Council has honored five alumni for service to the College and their communities as well as for career achievements. Harris McKee ’61, Th’63, Edward Heald ’68, and Lynne Hamel Gaudet ’81 received 2018-19 Dartmouth Alumni Awards, and John Valdez ’07 and Melanie Pastuck ’11 earned 2018-19 Dartmouth Young Alumni Distinguished Service Awards. Neurosurgeon Steve Haines ’71, M.D., has been awarded the Neurosurgical Society of America Medal for his efforts to “significantly influence the clinical practice of neurosurgery through personal achievement.” Haines chaired the neurological surgery departments at the Medical University of South Carolina (1997-2003) and the University of Minnesota (2004-17).

Alex Blumrosen ’82 has been awarded the French Legion of Honor, the government’s highest order of distinction, for his efforts as president of the Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Foundation since 2013. He led efforts to transfer management of the memorial, a crypt just outside Paris where American volunteer pilots who flew with French squadrons during WW I are buried, to the U.S. American Battle Monuments Commission.

Gabriel Kind ’82, M.D., has been named a director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the national certifying body for plastic and reconstructive surgery. Kind, president of Kind-Chang Plastic Surgery in San Francisco, specializes in breast reconstruction, hand surgery, and aesthetic surgery.

Rutgers University ecologist Rachael Winfree ’90 has been named one of the “most influential scientific researchers” in ecology from 2008-18, according to a Clarivate Analytics global review of publications most cited by experts in the field. Winfree’s research focuses on plant-pollinator networks and the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Kathleen Theoharides ’04 has been appointed Massachusetts energy and environmental affairs secretary, where she will oversee the state’s six natural resource and energy regulatory agencies. The Arlington resident joined the Massachusetts department in 2016 as director of climate and global warming solutions.

David Martosko ’91, the U.S. political editor of the website of British tabloid The Daily Mail, is part of the team that won a Daytime Emmy Award for DailyMailTV. The daily TV show was named “Outstanding Entertainment News Program.”
