David William Sides ’67

David William Sides ’67 of West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, died on March 5 following a long struggle with ALS. Dave came to college from Fairfield, Connecticut, majored in English, and was a brother of Phi Delta Psi. After graduation Dave served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant, becoming an artillery instructor, forward observer, and battery commander of A Battery, 83rd Artillery Battalion. His unit supported the 101st Airborne and Marine infantry units engaged in ground operations near the demilitarized zone in Vietnam. While serving at Firebase Bastogne in Vietnam, he was twice awarded the Bronze Star for distinguished service. Dave returned to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he spent his career in the insurance business, although he would say he was a fly-fisherman, with insurance as his hobby. His early years spent in Quebec gave him a lifelong love of hockey, which he played avidly until he was 70. Dave wrote in the 50th reunion book, “For all the good, and despite the bad, I am at peace with myself. I live in the moment, right here, right now, and keep my heart open to what God will continue to bring me. I am at peace.” Dave was married for 33 years to Susan Hayes until her passing in 2008. He is survived by daughter Jessica; sister Lynne and her husband, Peter; brother Tom and his wife, Judy; sister Nancy and her husband, Jim; and partner Marie. A remembrance service is scheduled for August 3 at the First Congregational Church in Hampton, New Hampshire.
