George Morrison Poland ’65
George Morrison Poland ’65 passed away February 1 at his home in West Kingston, Rhode Island. George grew up in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and came to Dartmouth from Governor Dummer Academy and Gloucester High School. At Dartmouth he majored in history, was a member of Kappa Sigma, and played soccer. After graduating he earned his M.B.A. from Columbia, then served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. George was predeceased by his parents, Warren and Edith Poland, and sister Nancy. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Yardley; daughters Alyssa (and husband Joaquim), Sarah, and Elizabeth; and grandchildren Alora, Rocco, and Luca. He also leaves behind his devoted four-legged friend Ollie. George’s curiosity led him to pursue many jobs and interests through the years, but what he loved most was connecting with people. He served the College as an alumni admissions interviewer. He enjoyed digging into a good conversation—he would talk to anyone, anytime, about anything with genuine interest and a sparkle in his eye. His heart was the most kind and loving, he cared deeply and loved fully. He was happiest outdoors, no matter the weather, especially with Yardley and Ollie by his side. George will be remembered fondly for his humor, kind smile, and unconditional love for family.
