Carl Fogelberg ’63
Carl Fogelberg ’63 died in New York City on January 22. Carl graduated from Southside High School in Rockville Center, New York, where he was a member of the football and track teams in addition to being the class treasurer. At Dartmouth he, and roommates Bill Blumenschein and Ed Comisky, made good friends on the third floor of Russell Sage. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. After graduation Carl joined the Marines and was stationed in or near Danang, Vietnam, where he had occasion to meet up with Blumenschein. After the Marines Carl earned his law degree at George Washington Law School, working first on the staff of the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. While there, Carl worked on unequal enforcement of D.C. laws, racial discrimination, and prison reform, among other issues. He was married briefly to a high school friend, but had no children. After a period in Vermont, Carl went to work for the Home Insurance Co. as a counsel specializing in insurance defense. He then joined LaBrum & Doak, a law firm specializing in insurance defense cases, as managing partner of its New York City office. A former colleague said, “Carl had an Ivy League mind and a New York sense of humor and a personality that was the best of both. He was a brilliant lawyer who always loved a challenge and stayed true to his convictions, which were exemplary by any measure.” Carl is survived by his sister, Christine.
