John C. Cavanagh ’55

John C. Cavanagh ’55 passed away on March 30 in San Antonio, Texas. John came to Dartmouth from Northampton, Massachusetts. He majored in history and was a member of the Dartmouth Players and Kappa Kappa Kappa. John earned an M.A. in history from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from Duke. He began his teaching career at Duke and the University of Tennessee. In 1970 he became the chairman of the history department at Suffolk University in Boston. His research interests included the American South and the Revolutionary War. He wrote a book on North Carolina’s ratification of the Constitution and a biography of Gen. Benjamin Lincoln. Surviving John are his wife, Beth, and stepchildren Camille, Mariah, and Brevick.
