Morris Feldman ’60 died on July 19, 2012, in Arden Court, an assisted living facility near his Chicago home. Morris had been a resident of the facility for the last two years of his life. According to his widow, Nancy, he was admitted for dementia, which was first diagnosed in 2008. By the time of his death Morris, who was fluent in three languages, was unable to communicate in any language. Morris is survived by Nancy, his wife of 23 years. They had no children. While at Dartmouth Morris majored in French, crewed for four years and was significantly involved in the Handel Society, Film Society, Le Circle Francais, Dartmouth Outing Club and Cabin & Trail. He was in the Army ROTC for four years. His interests and involvements at Dartmouth were indicative of an intellect and broad range of interests that manifested themselves throughout his life. Following his service in the Army, “Moe” returned to the Chicago area, where he managed the family business until he felt compelled to pursue a career in teaching. Both he and Nancy devoted the balance of their active lives teaching in the Chicago school system—he in English as a second language (ESL) and she as an elementary and middle school teacher. Moe became the coordinator of the ESL program in the Chicago school system. He was also instrumental in founding the Chicago League of Finnish Americans, an organization that supported a close-knit community of caring and supportive friends.
