Michael W. Ivy ’59

Michael W. Ivy ’59 died on June 8, 2019. He entered Dartmouth from Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C., majored in psychology, and was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi. He earned his M.D. from Howard University College of Medicine in 1963 and then served as an Army medical doctor for about seven years. In 1970 Mike began an obstetrics practice in the northern Virginia area that included the delivery of more than 8,000 babies and service as head of obstetrics and gynecology at what is now known as Virginia Medical Center in Arlington. He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and an advocate for quality medical care for indigent patients. He retired from his medical practice in 2004. He was also an avid sailor and raced multihull sailboats competitively. He leaves Carolyn, his wife of nearly 60 years, daughters Karen ’84 (and her husband, John) and Kristine (and her husband, Ben), and two grandchildren.
