Maureen Obiamaka Aniakudo ’86

Maureen Obiamaka Aniakudo ’86 died June 3. Obi, whose name means “Gracious of Heart,” was born on October 30, 1964, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After Dartmouth Obi became the second black female firefighter in Milwaukee in July 1987. She became an emergency medical technician for the department and was certified for special team operations, including scene safety, scene command communications, dive team rescue, deep tunnel rescue, and mass casualty. Obi served the fire department and her community for 10 years. She then pursued a degree in medicine from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and participated in two residencies, in family medicine and psychiatry. Obi was licensed to practice medicine in Wisconsin, California, Virginia, and Texas. As a licensed psychiatrist, Obi contracted with the armed forces and worked with soldiers who suffered with PTSD and other mental difficulties. Obi applied her talents as CEO and founder of the Arunaobi Integrated Medical Behavioral Health Clinic, a private clinic in Milwaukee designed to meet the needs of the urban population’s medical, mental health, and substance abuse treatment challenges. A memorial service was held for Obi on June 16 at Divine Savior Holy Angels Nuns Chapel in Milwaukee.
