Martin J. Bowne ’63

Martin J. Bowne ’63, former class president, died on August 21 in Philadelphia. He was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, and attended Croydon Hall Academy. At Dartmouth Marty majored in economics, was in ROTC all four years, was active in the DOC, and played rugby. He was a brother of Gamma Delt and its athletic chairman. After receiving his M.B.A., Marty served in the Army in Germany, working on a small team that armed Nike Hercules missiles. He was a certified public accountant and a retired partner of Ernst and Young, where he worked for 35 years, rising to become mergers and acquisitions partner. Marty was active in his association with Dartmouth and the class of ’63. His list of alumni activities is extensive, covering regional club and class activities (including chair of our 45th reunion), alumni fund (class agent), and Alumni Council work. In retirement his Dartmouth activities increased, and he became class vice president and president (2003-08). Marty won the ’63 Soaring Pine Award in 2018, recognizing his work for Dartmouth (including managing the class’ scholars program) and his management of church missions to Guatemala for several years and his work in a prison ministry, soup kitchens, and as a board member for Family Promise aiding homeless people. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lenore, two children, and three grandchildren.
