Martin E. Doyle ’76

Martin E. Doyle ’76 passed away on September 20, 2020. Since word of his sudden death reached the Dartmouth community, many classmates have used the word “loved” to describe his impact. Marty deeply loved Dartmouth and Dartmouth people, and Dartmouth people loved Marty—from his arrival on campus from Elmira, New York, until his last days. He was a commanding presence on campus—as an excellent student who would subsequently attend Boston College Law School, a warm and welcoming resident of New Hampshire Hall for a few years, and at Sigma Nu, where his brothers from the classes of ’73 to ’79 continue to use the term “legend” to capture his impact. He was a core member of the Dartmouth lacrosse community, which he served as its major domo, No. 1 fan, and chief raconteur. He was a friend to all, and all in Hanover were his friends. A self-diagnosed “recovering lawyer,” Marty launched several new medical devices, including the first PC-based diagnostic ultrasound. He returned to Hanover to foster the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network, lecture at Tuck School, and mentor the next generation of biomedical entrepreneurs. Marty was the proud father of sons Riley, Th’08, and Brennan, who survive him. He was blessed with his partner, Jen, who was with him as he passed. The class sends its sincere condolences to them.
