Martin B. Friedman ’55

Martin B. Friedman ’55, Ph.D., died at home in Berkeley, California, on April 1 surrounded by children Edith, Max, and Elizabeth. His wife predeceased him. Martin was a lifelong scholar who loved reading and could quote Shakespeare, Rousseau, or Samuel Johnson for any occasion. He came to Dartmouth from Wordmere High School in New York City. He majored in English and became proficient in reading and speaking French. After graduation Martin went to Paris for a year and earned a French language degree at the Sorbonne. He then entered the Ph.D. program in English at Yale, earning his degree in 1962 and becoming a part-time instructor at Columbia and Fairleigh Dickinson universities. Martin served a year as a visiting professor at the Sorbonne in France before teaching six years at Tufts University. In 1969 he became a professor at California State University in Hayward.
