Mark Gorman ’83

Mark Gorman ’83 died February 25 following a long battle with cancer. Mark came to Dartmouth from Glens Falls, New York. At Dartmouth Mark majored in government and economics and was involved in a variety of activities, including Class Council, Green Key Society, Summer Carnival, and the Interdormitory Council. He also participated in the foreign study program in government. Following graduation Mark studied international relations at the London School of Economics and subsequently earned a law degree from the University of Chicago Law School. His professional career began as an associate in the New York office of Debevoise & Plimpton, followed by the Continental Corp., where he served as assistant vice president and associate corporate counsel and then as general counsel and secretary of Insurnet Inc., a Continental subsidiary. Mark then joined the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP as a partner in the New York and London offices with a practice focusing on U.S. and international transactional matters such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic investments. In 2003 Mark joined Cisco Systems Inc. of San Jose, California, where he headed acquisition- and investment-related activities until his death. In June 2016 Mark married his longtime partner, Michael Sporn, in an evening wedding attended by many Dartmouth classmates. Mark embraced his role as loving stepfather to Zach, Jake, and Leah. In addition to his husband and stepchildren, Mark is survived by his mother, brother Gregg ’85, sisters Amanda and Emily, and many friends.
