Loretta Kathleen Berger ’89

Loretta Kathleen Berger ’89, M.D.,passed away unexpectedly on May 4 at Massachusetts General Hospital from complications of a blood infection.A graduate of Lexington (Massachusetts) High School, where she ran cross-country and played saxophone, Lorie received her A.B., magna cum laude, in classics and Russian area studies. Lorie was active in the Barbary Coast Jazz Orchestra, Marching Band, Dartmouth Wind Symphony, Kappa Delta Epsilon/Alpha Chi Omega, and Russian Club. Lorie was also an admissions volunteer for 20 years.After Dartmouth Lorie earned her master’s in economics and international studies from Johns Hopkins University, M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and a master’s in preventive medicine from Boston University School of Public Health. At the time of her death, Lorie was an urgent care physician at Harvard University Health Services and assistant dean of clinical medicine at the Saba University School of Medicine.Lorie’s passion was travel, and she was a unique and vibrant woman with a flair for fashion and a lively, though sometimes irreverent, sense of humor.Lorie is survived by sisters Rosemary, Maria, and Natalie ’98; brothers-in-law John and Erik Saunders ’99, Th’00; niece Helen; nephews Ryan and Charles; and dear friend José.The family would appreciate donations in Loretta’s memory to Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215 (joslin.org; or Partners In Health, P.O.
