LeDarrell Edward Murray ’79

LeDarrell Edward Murray ’79 died on October 2, 2023. LeDarrell was born on December 4, 1957, and grew up in Cleveland and attended Empire Junior High. He then attended Culver Military Academy, where he rowed crew and played football. At Dartmouth LeDarrell played linebacker on the freshman football team, majored in history, participated in the Tucker Foundation, and studied in London with the foreign study program. He later earned a degree in education from North Carolina Central University (NCUU). LeDarrell worked for many years as an educator in the North Carolina public school systems and as a security officer at NCCU. His colleagues wrote: “LeDarrell dedicated himself to keeping our campus safe. He touched the lives of countless students, faculty, and staff with his kindness and dedication.” LeDarrell was a Sunday school teacher at the Assembly Chapel Progressive Primitive Baptist Church in Cascade, Virginia, and later joined and served as a tutor at the First Calvary Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina. LeDarrell is survived by daughter Eboni; grandchildren Noah, Farrah, Shane, and Chayse; former wife Deborah; mother Mary; brothers LeRueso, LaBaron ’80, and Kevin; sister LaTonya; and dear friend Margaret. Son Sam and sisters Cheryl and Vanessa predeceased him. His Dartmouth football teammates remember LeDarrell “worked extremely hard to maximize his physical capabilities and was highly intelligent and generous with a droll wit and engaging personality.” He will be missed.
