Lawrence T. Markin ’52

Lawrence T. Markin ’52 died at the Sarasota Bay Club in Sarasota, Florida, on January 19. Larry was born in Rochester, New York, on November 5, 1930, and graduated from Brighton High School in 1948. He then earned his A.B. from Dartmouth and M.B.A. from Amos Tuck School of Business in 1953. He was a member of Pi Lambda Phi. Following college, Larry served for two years in the U.S. Army and was posted at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He and Sheila Ruben were married on June 13, 1954, and enjoyed 64 years together before she passed away in 2018. Larry’s career was in the family insurance business in Rochester, first at Markin-Shaw and then, in 1972, he merged with another company to become Hatch-Leonard/Markin-Shaw, the third largest in Rochester. For 38 years he worked as an independent insurance agent. At retirement Larry and Sheila moved to Sarasota, where Larry took up painting furniture as a hobby. Larry moved to the Sarasota Bay Club after Sheila’s passing. He was a loyal Dartmouth alumnus and made friends quickly and kept them throughout his life. He had a kind, generous spirit and loved sports, travel, family, and theater. He lived by the motto, “Smile and the world smiles with you.” Larry is survived by daughters Linda ’77 and Amy and grandsons Samuel and Joseph.
