Lawrence Barbiers Russell ’54

Lawrence Barbiers Russell ’54 passed away peacefully on September 10 in Alpharetta, Georgia. Larry came to Dartmouth from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, where he was active in dramatics and choir. At Dartmouth he majored in sociology, was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, and participated in WDBS, the Dartmouth Outing Club, intramural athletics, and Army ROTC. After service in the Army Ordnance Corps in 1960 he earned a B.S. in hotel administration from Cornell University. While working at Sea Island, Georgia, in the summer of 1958 he met Stella Marie Girardeau, whom he wed in 1959. Larry began a long career in hotel management and hospitality with the San Juan Intercontinental Hotel. Larry worked in hotels in Washington, D.C., and in the Atlanta Marriott Hotel. In 1972 he moved to the Dallas Marriott Hotel as sales director, after which he returned to Washington, D.C., as the regional director of advertising and public relations in the corporate office. He maintained contact with Dartmouth as a class agent and through the Dartmouth Club of Georgia. He was an avid sports fan, loving the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed playing golf and tending to his garden. He never lost his great sense of humor. Larry leaves his wife, Marie; children Lawrence Jr., Gregory ’85, and Tierney and their spouses; and grandchildren John, Stefan, Loren, and Parker.
