Laurence C. Schiffenhaus ’52
Laurence C. Schiffenhaus ’52 passed away peacefully on March 2 in Essex Falls, New Jersey. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Larry graduated from Dartmouth with a sociology degree. He was a member of Alpha Delta. He then married Betty V. Schiffenhaus before serving in the Korean War in the U.S. Army. He and Betty had an amazing marriage of 74 years, raising children Chip, Mary Ann, Betsy, Peggy, Patty, Peter, and Mark. They survive him, with 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Larry (with brother Anton) a driving force behind the growth of Schaftenau’s Packaging Corp., founded by his great-grandfather in 1895, into one of the industry’s most prestigious packaging entities. They led the company into a new era of innovation, focusing on environmentally friendly packaging and advanced printing technologies. In recognition of his contributions to the industry, Larry was inducted into the AICC Hall of Fame in 1995. Beyond his life in the box business, Larry was an accomplished amateur photographer, avid vegetable gardener at his homes in New Jersey and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and a big fan of jazz music. He also enjoyed his time on the golf course and his membership and friends at Montclair Golf Club in New Jersey. Larry’s father, Joseph, was a member of the class of 1923.
