Larrie S. Calvert ’57

Larrie S. Calvert ’57 died on March 5 in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Larrie graduated from Vermont Academy, majored in sociology, and was a member of Delta Tau Delta, serving as its house manager. After graduation he returned to Vermont Academy, where he held teaching and coaching positions. In 1959 Larrie started a sales career in the chemical industry with General Aniline & Film Corp. and Nopco Chemicals. He was cofounder of Pollution Control Industries in Summit, New Jersey, and served as its CEO for 25 years until his retirement in 1997. Larrie was an avid golfer, starting as a caddie at 13. He played for more than 71 years on more than 150 courses, 44 in Northern Ireland, Ireland, and Scotland. He was a member of the Morris County Golf Club in Covent Station, New Jersey, and served for six years on its board. He ardently followed the New York Giants and the New York Mets. Larrie was on the board of trustees of Vermont Academy for two three-year terms in the 1970s and 1990s. He also served on the board of trustees of East Orange (New Jersey) General Hospital from l980 to 1994 and was president of the Hospital Foundation. Larrie was a longtime alumni fund volunteer and hosted a well-attended ’57 mini-reunion in St. Augustine, Florida. He is survived by Gretchen, his wife of 57 years; daughters Kirsten ’86, Elizabeth, and Molly; and five grandchildren.
