Joseph S. Caldwell III ’51
Joseph S. Caldwell III ’51, whose great passions included fine art and fly fishing, died on October 21, 2017, in Syracuse, New York. Joe founded the Caldwell Gallery in 1973, turning what had been an avocation into a satisfying and successful career as a private art dealer, buying, selling and evaluating fine American and European art. His main gallery was in Manlius, New York, with a satellite gallery in West Palm Beach, Florida. In 2014 he and his son, Jay ’85, launched a new venture, Caldwell Gallery Hudson, in the northern Catskills. He remained active in the business until his death, observing, “You retire from work. You don’t retire from passion. I’m lucky to be doing something that I really love.” Joe thrived on finding new interests and experiences. He traveled the world in search of trout, salmon and steelhead, often accompanied by his son. Cribbage was another favorite pastime. Above all, he delighted in his family—wife Marcy, Jay, daughters Heather ’89 and Cynthia and six grandchildren. Joe attended Deerfield Academy before coming to Dartmouth. He was a member of Zeta Psi, the Interfraternity Council and the varsity lacrosse team and the speed-skating team, which he captained. He later served as president of the Dartmouth Club of Central New York and as a member of his class executive committee. He was especially gracious in reaching out to members of the class of ’51 family who were experiencing illness or hard times.
