Joseph R. Attonito ’63

Joseph R. Attonito ’63 died peacefully at his home in Tequesta, Florida, on December 5, 2023. He was born in Rockville Center, New York, and attended Brooklyn Prep School, where he was a class officer and participated in the glee club, dramatics, debate, and soccer. At Dartmouth Joe majored in history, was a brother in Tri-Kap (secretary), and participated in the Glee Club, the Dartmouth Players, and Le Cercle Francais. He went on to earn a bachelor of laws at Columbia University in 1966. Joe lived most of his life in East Quogue, New York, and built a private law practice in Smithtown and Remsenberg, New York. Joe retired after 45 years and was actively involved in local issues such as the Brooklyn Prep Alumni Association, the Save Gardiner Island Committee, and the Stonybrook Foundation. He was a longtime chairman of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation and was proud to grant numerous scholarships to history students in New York. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Joe is survived by his first wife, Victoria, and their two children; his wife, Kathleen, and her son, who was adopted by Joe; and four grandchildren.
